Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) or Yogyakarta State University (formerly IKIP Yogyakarta or Yogyakarta Institute of Teacher Education and Educational Sciences) was founded on May 21, 1964. Historically, IKIP Yogyakarta was a merger of two educational institutions: the Faculty of Pedagogy of Gadjah Mada University and the Institute of Teacher Education. These two institutions offered study programs of educational sciences and teacher education.

Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) International Programs

UNY is located in the province of Yogyakarta Special Region, Indonesia. This city is known as "student's city" due to the many educational institutions that are located here. Tens of thousands of new students arrive in Yogyakarta each year. This creates a unique atmosphere in the area, especially around university campuses. Yogyakarta has been traditionally chosen as a city to study for many students around Indonesia, and now more and more foreign students are attending education programs in Yogyakarta.

UNY is currently classified into Cluster I ranking by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education in 2018. Cluster I consists of fourteen Higher Education Institutions and UNY occupies the eleventh position out of 4.529 Higher Education Institutions throughout Indonesia.

One of the ranking criteria includes the number of the students’ achievements in the national and international competitions related to the fields of reasoning, sports, arts, talents, and technologies. Therefore, the students’ great potentials are taken into consideration in the UNY selection process.

Important Information

Please note that the information above is based on an official release in mid-2021. Always check for updates on UNY English website at https://www.uny.ac.id or at UNY International Office. Be aware as well that not all information is available in English. Do not hesitate to contact the UNY admin or us in Studinesia through the Contact Form to get help for free.

We recommend you ask the administrator of each program about all the details since not all important information is available online in English. Do call or text or email the admin about your questions or inquiries. The preferred tool is using WhatsApp, social media account, and email. Be prepared to have an admin who is not fluent in English, so speak slowly and clearly. Combine the communication with written format to avoid misunderstanding as far as you can.

Bear in mind that all Indonesian higher education institutions are able to accept international students in programs outside the ones labeled as "international programs." That means that those regular programs are held in Indonesian language, and all international students should have sufficient language capability to enter the program.
